San Carlos Borromeo del Rio Carmelo Mission: Explore California's History

Founded in 1771, the San Carlos Borromeo del Rio Carmelo Mission (also known as the Carmel Mission) is a U.S. National Historic Landmark as well as an active Roman Catholic church. You'll find several museums with cultural displays, including Mexican-American heirloom keepsakes, Native American artifacts, and restored rooms from the 1800's. Visitors are welcome to attend church services, and self-guided tours of the Mission are also available.

  • Can I access the Mission with my Wheelchair?

    The Mission's courtyards and basilica are wheelchair accessible. However, because this attraction is centuries old, there are also areas that are accessed only by stairs. Please contact the Mission at 1 (831) 624-1271 ext. 210 for additional information about the accessible areas.
  • Are there any group tours available?

    Yes, group tours with a docent are available by reservation for groups with a minimum of 15 people and a maximum of 80. Guided tours cost $8 per person and generally last for one hour. Tours are based on property and docent availability, and can be arranged by calling 1 (831) 624-1271 ext. 213.
