  • When was Mission San Carlos Borromeo De Carmelo built?
    The Carmel Mission was founded on June 3, 1770 by Captain Gaspar de Portola and Franciscan Father Junípero Serra beside Monterey Bay. Father Serra lived on the Monterey Peninsula for 14 years creating the Carmel Mission and then calling it home until his death in 1784.
  • Is the Carmel Mission accessible by wheelchair?
    The Mission's courtyards and basilica are wheelchair accessible. However, because this attraction is centuries old, there are also areas that are accessed only by stairs. Please contact the Mission at 1 (831) 624-1271 ext. 210 for additional information about the accessible areas.
  • Does the Carmel Mission offer group tours?
    Yes, group tours with a docent are given by reservation for groups of a minimum of 15 people and a maximum of 80. Guided tours cost $8 per person and generally last for one hour. Tours can be arranged by calling (831) 624-1271 ext. 213.
