- When was Mission San Carlos Borromeo De Carmelo built? The Carmel Mission was founded on June 3, 1770 by Captain Gaspar de Portola and Franciscan Father Junípero Serra beside Monterey Bay. Father Serra lived on the Monterey Peninsula for 14 years creating the Carmel Mission and then calling it home until his death in 1784.
- Is the Carmel Mission accessible by wheelchair? The Mission's courtyards and basilica are wheelchair accessible. However, because this attraction is centuries old, there are also areas that are accessed only by stairs.
