The Carmel Mission was founded on June 3, 1770 by Captain Gaspar de Portola and Franciscan Father Junípero Serra beside Monterey Bay. Father Serra lived on the Monterey Peninsula for 14 years creating the Carmel Mission and then calling it home until his death in 1784.
